Samsung Galaxy Nexus injunction overturned in appeals court

A US appeals court has lifted the ban on the sale of Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone that went into effect late last month. A similar ruling fell short for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 which still remains on the ban list but the ball is now in Apple’s court (no pun intended) on whether or not they want to object the ruling from appeals court.

Google was able to get the Galaxy Nexus reinstated by promising that the phone would soon ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. This OS revision is said to contain tweaks that address the patents in question. Furthermore, Google will also be updating Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with similar workarounds that don’t infringe on the Apple patents in question.

US District Court Judge Lucy Koh banned the Samsung smartphone and tablet on June 30 in a rare pre-trial injunction. She ruled that Samsung infringed on four Apple patents and that Cupertino would see more harm if the injunction wasn’t put in place than Samsung would if it was.

Apple has until July 12 to file an objection to the appeal. Meanwhile, barring any appeals, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will have to remain off store shelves until the trial begins on July 30.

The Galaxy Nexus is back on sale in the Google Play Store for $349 with a note that it will be shipping soon with Jelly Bean. The phone has an estimated ship time of 1-2 weeks as of writing.

Galaxy Nexus to hit Verizon stores this Friday, $199 w/ contract

While a variant of Samsung's Galaxy Nexus is already available internationally, the U.S. is still waiting on the subsidized CDMA version set to be sold by Verizon. This scoop shows the handset may already be in stores and is set to sell on Friday 9, 2011. 

Earlier, Verizon announced that the company would be offering the Galaxy Nexus before the end of 2011. Just two weeks ago, we reported rumors the phone would sell for $199 with a two-year contract and that number seems to have been confirmed. 

The new Nexus is especially exciting for individuals in the United States, as it is the first Ice Cream Sandwich phone to officially hit the U.S. market. Ice Cream Sandwich is said to be the mostsubstantial update to Android thus far, including many new changes and improvements, especially in terms of usability and interface.

The handset itself features an AMOLED display measuring in at 4.65-inch with a high-density resolution of 1270 x 720. The Galaxy Nexus will also include a 1.2GHz dual core OMAP 4460 processor, 1GB of RAM, a choice of 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, rear-facing 5MP camera with a back-lit CMOS sensor and a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera for video calls. 

The leaked memo also mentions a few other interesting details. Each Verizon store will receive a minimum shipment of 15 phones. Units will be replenished as they run out. The document makes a point that stores will not be receiving the phones through their "normal" receiving process, presumably to avoid leaks similar to ones Verizon has had in the past.

Stores are not to open, display or sell these phones until Friday, so those anxiously awaiting the Galaxy Nexus will have to continue to wait until the official release date. However, despite the cautionary words, the photo above is a clear demonstration of how difficult it is to keep new gadgets under wraps.

Verizon Wireless holiday ad shows Galaxy Nexus priced at $199.99

A series of Verizon Wireless holiday ads appearing on various sites across the Internet show the phone will be available for $199.99 with a two year service agreement. The ads were first spotted byAndroid Police and have since shown up on other sites including Phandroid and DroidForums.

The ads are all being served by NetShelter which is a premium advertising network that supplies ads to website owners. NetShelter works directly with carriers and manufacturers so it’s unlikely that the ads are fake.

When a user clicks Learn More on the ad, they are taken to this Black Friday deals page, although the Galaxy Nexus is nowhere to be found. AP notes the following tag in the deals URL “cmp=BAC-OM-111129-HOLIDAYSAMSUNG” which could point to 11/29 as the starting date for the phone’s availability. It could just as easily indicate the final day of the sale, or not have any relevance at all.

Google giving away 10 Galaxy Nexus smartphones on Twitter

Google has launched a contest on Twitterto give away 10 Galaxy Nexus smartphones in 10 days to promote the phone’s pending release. The promotion started on Saturday and will run until Monday, November 21.

To enter, you must first have a Twitter account and follow @googlenexus. Each day Google will post an essay question or puzzle for hopefuls to answer. To submit a solution, reply to Google's tweet and include the #googlenexus hashtag.

To give you an idea of what to expect, the first challenge presented contestants with an image and asked them to decipher a code to finish the following sentence: “#GalaxyNexus is well-traveled, coming to @googlenexus from [answer].” The answer was “The Sandwich Islands”, although I have no clue how to arrive at that answer based on the hint. Any ideas?

Challenge two required users to make something geeky and edible. Photo and video submissions were accepted for this challenge and entries were evaluated based on creativity, originality and use of humor. The third challenge is set to kick off today at 3pm PST. Salty Samsung Galaxy S III Specification

It's no surprise that Samsung is preparing another Galaxy S flagship smartphone but now, after taking a dose of salt to keep us grounded (and salty), we may have an idea of what the South Korean company has in plan for its successful Galaxy S family.

The slide below includes a timeline for the Galaxy S series and mentions for 2012 the Galaxy S III which is said to feature a 4.6-inch Super AMOLED Plus HD (1280 x 720) touchscreen, a 1.8 GHz dual-core Exynos processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera. The image provided next to the specs doesn't look that enticing but it may be too early to complain, especially since the origin of the slide is sketchy.

Currently Samsung is busy preparing the Galaxy Nexus model and probably won't talk about the Galaxy S III until late February 2012 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona so let's keep the hype at reasonable levels for a while longer. Of course we still want two S III's, for to use daily and one to take to bed instead of a plush stuffed animal. What were we saying about hype?
