Facebook recently published a white paper concerning Internet.org, the social network’s plan to get the rest of the world online with the help of Ericsson, MediaTek, Nokia, Opera, Qualcomm and Samsung. In it, the company shared some rather interesting statistics related to the amount of media shared on the site.
Since its inception, Facebook users have collectively uploaded more than 250 billion photos to the site. On an average day, more than 350 million new images are added. To put that into perspective, photo sharing site Flickr sees roughly 3.5 million new pictures added daily and plays host to around 8 billion images in total.
Broken down into smaller increments of time, that equates to (roughly) 4,000 new photos being uploaded each second, 243,000 per minute and 14.58 million per hour.
Looking at the bigger picture (no pun intended), Facebook says there are more than 4.75 billion content items (including status updates, wall posts, photos, videos and comments), more than 4.5 billion Likes and more than 10 billion messages sent on an average day. Yeah – that’s a heck of a lot of data to process.
Considering Facebook now has about 1.15 billion users, that means each user has uploaded around 217 images. Of course, all of these numbers are likely to increase as Facebook continues to focus on image sharing. Just last month, the company introduced a new feature that lets multiple users contribute to a single photo album.
